S7 Client
The S7 client is responsible for communication with Siemens S7 PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers). It establishes connections, reads data blocks, and writes data to the PLC.
Configuration
The behavior of the S7 client is primarily configured through the administration interface, associated with Machine or Node objects. These settings are stored in the database and define the connection parameters and data access details for each PLC.
Configurable Parameters (via Admin Interface on Machine objects):
These parameters define the connection to the PLC server and are configured on the Machine object:
- S7 Client Enabled: A boolean flag to enable or disable S7 client functionality for a specific machine.
- S7 Client Host: The IP address or hostname of the Siemens S7 PLC.
- S7 Client Rack: The PLC rack number.
- S7 Client Slot: The PLC slot number.
- Request Interval: The frequency (in seconds) at which the client attempts to communicate with the PLC.
Configurable Parameters (via Admin Interface on Node objects):
These parameters define the specific data point within the PLC and are configured on individual Node objects:
- S7 Client DB Number: The Data Block (DB) number where the node's value is located.
- S7 Client Byte Offset: The starting byte offset within the specified data block for the node's value.
- S7 Client Bit Offset: The bit offset within the specified byte for boolean or bit-level values.
These parameters allow flexible configuration for different PLCs connected to various machines or nodes within the system.
Usage
The S7 client operates as a background task that periodically communicates with the PLC at a defined request interval. It connects to the PLC, reads data based on the configured parameters for each Node, and processes this data for storage and visualization within the application.
Error Handling
The client includes basic error handling for connection issues and communication failures. If a connection error to the PLC occurs or a failure during data reading/writing, these events are captured and logged. This enables monitoring of communication status and problem diagnosis.
Integration into the Scada3k application
Within the Scada3k application, the S7 client serves as a bridge between physical PLC devices and the digital SCADA system. It enables:
- Data Collection: Periodically reads data from the PLC (e.g., sensor values, machine status) and stores it in the application's database.
- Control: Potentially allows writing data back to the PLC for machine control (although the primary focus is on reading).
- Visualization: Provides current and historical data for the frontend dashboard, where operators can monitor it.
Overall, the S7 client is a key component for integrating industrial devices into the SCADA platform, ensuring reliable and configurable communication with PLCs.
